In 2014, the weather was quite... interesting. Just a lap after a normal pit stop for fuel and slicks (around 6:18 in this onboard video), the Toyota TS040 #8 did a lap around a mostly dry track. But then it suddendly started to rain heavily, but only on some parts of the track, causing carnage on the Mulsanne straight (12:30 in the video). You just can’t help feel sorry for the dude. Seeing him struggle with the marshalls to get the car running again, limping back to the pits with no front-end... These are the kind of things that happen during Le Mans, but honestly it’s a bit heartbraking.

Heartbreaking for the toyota who was a cause in the incident and managed to get away? How about heartbreaking for the audi who was driving at a speed appropriate for the conditions and was plowed into. He had to retire because he had the sense to not go into heavy rain flat out on slicks.

Problem is I think there was a local slow zone and the Toyota didn’t see it. I agree that he is partially at fault, but the way there was a gaggle of cars going 60 didn’t help.

No local slow zone at that point.
